Neosantara.id-Bintan Island,- A number of fruit vendors at the Trikora-Bintan route are threatened with bankruptcy, due to Bintan Blue Coral Resort (BBC), located in Kampung Mengkurus Teluk Bakau-Bintan Island, allegedly undermining local fruit vendors by monopolizing fruit trade.
To neosantara.id, Sunday (10/6), one of the fruit vendors, Rajiman (45) complained with the decrease in sales after BBC opened its own fruit shop. In fact, not only Rajiman, but dozens of other fruit vendors have been optimistic in depending for their livelihood on selling fruits.
"Initially I only sell some watermelon, but after seeing the response of tourists who were shopping, I was convinced with fruit selling business. I was looking for a capital loan, and after the store was built and stocked many fruits, it turns out that the resort undermine our business by building a fruit stand as well", As explained by Rajiman, who claimed the same fate also experienced by eleven other fruit vendors.
The diminishing of fruit vendor's income had caused turmoil between the local vendors and the resort management, until the meeting of both parties facilitated by the Government of Bintan Regency through a letter of invitation Number 005/EKON/485 which took place on June 5, 2018. It was attended by several vendors, and government agencies such as Bintan Tourism Agency, Trade Office, SATPOL PP, Gunung Kijang Sector Police, BP3D, and BPMPD Bintan.
This was justified by Fauzi, one of the appointed vendors representing the voice of the fruit vendors in front of the Government of Bintan Regency and the BBC Resort while attending the meeting. The meeting took place at the Administrative Assistant Room of the Economy at Tanjung Uban. From the explanation of Fauzi, the mediation result had given a clear decision to the vendors defense by prohibiting the BBC Resort to open a similar fruit shop.
Unfortunately, the defense to the fruit vendors made BBC Resort increasingly stubborn in monopolizing the natural snacks of the tourists.
"As far as I know, they are still in operation, but if viewed from the legal aspect, there are no rules that allow the resort to open fruit shop," Fauzi said.
Sadly, Rajiman added, bus drivers are not allowed to stop tourists at the local community-run fruit stand.
"We are awry, they remained persistent, and even if they have to close the shop then we are also asked to close ours as well because both do not have any permit. So what do we have to do now," Complain Rajiman, who admits that his hope to depend his livelihood on selling fruits is gone.
To be noted, fruit vendors along the Bintan route to the tourist area at Trikora claim to be able to reap more profits in transactions with foreign tourists because local consumers can not be a guarantee in selling circulation.
Of the incident, not few fruit vendors were force to throw away rotting fruits that did not sell, even from the confession of Rajiman himself; he had suffered huge losses because some sacks of fruits sold by him did not interest any buyers, especially foreign tourists. Of the dozens of fruit vendors, some of them have gone out of business because of losses. (ysn)
Investigation to the location of fruit stand managed by BBC Resort
To ascertain the information submitted by micro business actors, especially the fruit vendors, neosantara.id team moves directly to the BBC Resort location.
From the entrance gate, the media crew was treated to a semi-permanent building containing variety of fruits. The arrangement is also similar to what is done by fruit vendors outside of the resort.
What is different from the BBC Resorts version of the fruit shop is that the price is high. Although from the communication with the merchandiser at the counter there is a price difference between foreign tourists and local visitors.
"In writing it is expensive, but we distinguish between foreign tourists who are shopping with locals, if it is local residents, sell at standard price," Said the woman who served as a merchant.
However, this does not mean that the BBC Resorts fruit store has an equal selling price. Infact, the purchased price made by the media crew in the store is much more expensive when compared with the prices offered by the local fruit vendor that is managed by the community. (neosantara.id team)
